“Flutter into Fall” at the Nature Museum with a day-long celebration of our beloved butterflies and brand new exhibit, Dora and Diego—Let’s Explore! Participate in monarch butterfly tagging demos, butterfly craft projects, multiple butterfly releases, scavenger hunts, an outdoor bug blitz, and more! Illinois residents can enjoy free admission with a suggested donation.

    Monarch Butterfly Tagging | 11am, 1pm

    Wish migrating monarch butterflies ‘good luck’ as they begin their incredible journey from Chicago to Mexico where they will spend the winter! Assist our scientists as they tag and release local monarch butterflies, contributing to an international research project that tracks monarch migration success rates.

    Re-discover the Butterfly Haven | 10am – 3pm

    Seek out unique butterflies and discover the “hidden gems” of the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven in our insider’s scavenger hunt. Don’t miss three First Flight Butterfly Releases happening at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 2pm.

    Make Your Own Butterfly Wind Chime | 11am – 1pm

    Create your very own butterfly wind chimes for a year-round reminder of our fluttery friends with our pals from Lillstreet Art Center. Choose your own beautifully pre-glazed ceramic butterflies shapes, beads, strings and bells. We'll tie them together with twine for an easy-breezy project you're sure to love in the Windy City.

    Bug Blitz | 10am – 3pm

    Help Nature Museum scientists identify local bugs (butterflies included)—using your smartphone! Learn how new natural science apps can get your family discovering and learning about real critters all around us.

    Take Home a Basil Seedling | Starting at 10am

    Meet our partners from Gotham Greens and learn more about their local produce and urban farming. Then, receive a basil seedling to take home, while supplies last.

    Touch and feel real butterfly specimens, examine butterflies from our scientific collections, and learn about our conservation work with butterflies and other pollinators.

    Seasonal Treats | 10am – 3pm

    Enjoy delicious grilled cheese and soup from Gayle’s Best Ever Grilled Cheese (10:30am – 1:30pm), and sip on hot spiced cider (11am – 2pm).
