Weed Wars: a Story in Three Parts (Audio Story)

What’s a weed? In 1990, five Chicago gardeners decided to challenge the city’s so-called “weed ordinance” in court. Their fight for the right to create natural landscapes in their own yards, without city or community intervention, marked a key historical moment in local environmental law and politics.

In “Weed Wars,” radio producers Nazanin Rafsanjani and Blue Chevigny revisit the case of the “Chicago Five” and look at some of the crusading personalities and prior legal battles that led up to it.
