National Geographic Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes

September 26, 2009 -April 11, 2010

Watch a great white shark capture its prey, follow penguins glide beneath the ice, and take an ocean voyage with seals through Crittercam. Crittercam is a scientific video- and data-gathering tool safely worn by wild animals, offering researchers insights into animal behavior and clues to protecting animals and the world we share. The exhibition focuses on Crittercam’s deployment on seals and sea lions, sharks, sea turtles, whales, penguins, bears and lions.

National Geographic Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes is organized and traveled by the National Geographic Museum, Washington, DC.

The Highlights

  • From atop a life-size model, watch point-of-view footage from a female leatherback.
  • Learn how seals and sea lions communicate, hunt, feed, care for their young and attract mates.
  • Get a close-up view of an 18-foot great white shark model and displays that illustrate the hunting and migratory behaviors of several shark species.
  • Feel a shark fin model that features the latest way of attaching the Crittercam — via a fin clamp.
  • Investigate a penguin’s life beneath the ice through an observation tunnel showing videos of penguins soaring underwater.
  • Crawl through a tunnel and pop up in a bubble to come face-to-face with a penguin wearing a working Crittercam. On exiting the tunnel, view footage of yourself from the penguin’s perspective.
  • Learn all about the Crittercam technology, with information on how it works and the original inspiration that led to its development.
  • Find out how Crittercam has aided in scientific research by allowing scientists to focus on particular challenges facing certain animals.
  • Meet Harrison, the Museum’s box turtle, who wears a Crittercam. His life inside and outside the Museum will be documented on the Museum’s YouTube page.
