Looking for the perfect activity for the whole family? The Nature Museum offers several classes designed to appeal to Mom, Dad and kids.

 

Note: Unless otherwise noted, register for all Family classes by downloading a registration form. For fee-based classes, space is limited and registration is required. Give A Hoot! (Saturdays, September 4 and 18, 11:00am – 3:00pm)

Join us for some family fun and discover what owls eat and more about their habitat by dissecting and investigating an owl pellet! Cost, $10.

 

Nature’s Creatures (Monday, September 6, 1:00pm)

Join Erin and her amazing creatures during this action-packed animal presentation. You’ll have the chance to interact with snakes, lizards, birds, and more as you learn about conservation and responsible pet ownership. A Nature Museum favorite!

 

Beekeeping 101 (Thursday, September 9, 1:00pm - 1:30pm)

Learn beekeeping techniques from the Nature Museum’s Director of Arthropod Research and visit the Museum’s new hive!

 

Pint Sized Preserving (Saturday, September 11th, 11am)

Get your family back into the kitchen to preserve the bounty of the season and create new traditions. Learn simple preserving techniques to capture the harvest, including quick pickling, fruit preserves, and oven drying. Learn then how to package these goodies as gifts to using leftover berry boxes from the farmers' market and old holiday cards. As a take-away, you'll receive a recipe booklet with additional resources on this subject. Presented by Melissa Graham, founder and president of Purple Asparagus, membership chair for Green City Market, and author of Little Locavores, a blog full of delicious morsels about family food and fun fresh from the farmers' market. $40 per adult/child pair, $10 per additional child.

2nd Annual Bugapalooza (Sunday, September 12, 10am – 5pm)

We're bringing out all of our creepy crawlies for the second annual family friendly event, which offers a unique opportunity to get to know more about numerous invertebrate species and meet the scientists who work with them. There will be a full day of fun activities for kids, including live animal exhibits, bug cooking demos, roach feeding, roach races and more.

 

Evenings with the Chicago Herpetological Society (Wednesday September 29, 7:30p.m.)

Bring the whole family to meet friends both warm blooded and cold blooded at the general meetings of the Chicago Herpetological Society.  Meetings include presentations by world-class herpetologists, a raffle of dry-goods, and a chance to meet people of all ages who love reptiles and amphibians—and there are always a few live animals, too.  Meetings are free and open to the public.

Bug Busters! (Saturdays, October 2 and 16, 11:00am – 3:00pm)

Meet and observe some bugs found in and around the Notebaert Nature Museum! Construct a small bug hotel and learn how to attract guests! Cost: Free with Museum admission.

 

Go Go Green 5K Run/Walk (Saturday, October 23, 9:00am)

Join the Nature Museum for the 3rd Annual Go Go Green 5K Run/Walk—organized to raise awareness about our urban ecosystem, support Nature Museum programs and educate residents about living a more eco-friendly life. All proceeds will benefit the Nature Museum to further its mission of inspiring people to learn about and care for nature and the environment.
