Nature Museum Summer Camps

 

Please see below for information on our 2010 Summer Camp sessions. Priority Registration for returning families begins December 4, 2009 with general registration beginning February 1, 2010. Both the Registration Form and camper Emergency Release Form must be received in order for your registration to be complete.

 

Fun-filled camps connect children to the wonders of nature through a unique combination of art, music, movement, hands-on science activities, and live animal encounters led by Nature Museum staff. Camps include family open houses the last Thursday evening of each session.

 

Camp fees include a camp t-shirt, reusable Wrap n’ Mat ®, and healthy daily snack(s). More t-shirts can be purchased prior to camp for $10 each. Campers must turn minimum age of camp before start of session.

Four-Year Olds Camps

 

Nature Detectives: - THIS CAMP IS FULL June 21 to July 1 – Monday to Friday* (no camp Friday, July 2)

Nature Explorers: - THIS CAMP IS FULL July 19 to 30 – Monday to Friday

Camp Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. / Aftercare: 1:00 to 3 p.m.

Cost: Members $375/session; Non-members $450/session. Aftercare $80/session.

 

Two-week, four-hour camps that focus on letting four-year old campers explore the nature in and around the Museum. During the camp day, campers will explore hands-on activity stations that relate to the session and day’s theme through art, scientific objects and collections, books, and games. They will also take part in outdoor or Museum exhibit-focused activities as well as music and movement activities. Campers can choose to attend one or both sessions during the summer. All sessions will accommodate up to 20 campers.

 

Five & Six-Year Old Camps

 

City Critters: - ONE SPOT LEFT July 5 to 16 – Monday to Friday

Reptiles & Amphibians: July 19 to 30 – Monday to Friday

Insects & Bugs: - THIS CAMP IS FULL August 2 to 13 – Monday to Friday

Camp Hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: Members $500/session; Non-members $575/session.

 

Two-week, six-hour camps for children ages five and six, all focusing on animals from the Museum’s live and preserved collections. The campers will take part in hands-on art, music, movement, and science activities related to the animal of the day. Campers can choose to attend one, two or three sessions during the summer. All sessions will accommodate up to 30 campers.

 

Seven & Eight-Year Old Camps

 

Wild Waterways: - THIS CAMP IS FULL July 5 to 16 – Monday to Friday

Nature’s Neighborhoods: - THIS CAMP IS FULL August 2 to 13 – Monday to Friday

Camp Hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: Members $525/session; Non-members $600/session.

 

These are two-week, six-hour camps for ages seven and eight. The first session, Wild Waterways, will focus on water ecosystems, such as those of lakes, ponds, and rivers. The second session, Nature’s Neighborhoods, will focus on the different land habitats found in Illinois, such as prairies, forests, and wetlands. Art, music, movement, hands-on science activities, and outdoor exploration will be incorporated into each day’s theme. All of our 7&8 year old campers take part in weekly field trips. Wild Waterways campers will take a canoe trip on the Chicago River with Chicago River Canoe and Kayak. Nature’s Neighborhoods campers will visit The Grove, a National Historic Landmark site where the founder of the Chicago Academy of Sciences’, Robert Kennicott, lived. Both camps will have a beach day visit to Lake Michigan. Campers can choose to attend one or both sessions during the summer. All sessions will accommodate up to 20 campers.

 

Nine & Ten-Year Old Camps NEW!

 

Green City Kids: June 21 to July 1 – Monday to Friday* (no camp will be held Friday, July 2)

Camp Hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: Members $525/session; Non-members $600/session.

 

This is a two-week, six-hour camp for ages nine and ten. The session will focus on green initiatives incorporated by the Museum as well as in and around the city of Chicago. Camp themes will center on eco-friendly practices such as recycling, composting, rooftop gardens, alternative energy, farmers markets, and creative re-use. Camp activities will take place in our Museum’s exhibits and on Museum grounds, and will incorporate art, music, movement, and hands-on science and recreational activities. All of our 9&10 year old campers will take part in weekly field trips to the Green City Market and will learn about urban farming practices with a visit to Uncommon Ground’s organic rooftop farm, the first certified organic rooftop farm in the United States! Camp is limited to 20 campers.

 

Pre-Camp Orientation

Thursday, June 10. 5:30- 8:00 p.m.

The Pre-Camp Orientation is for families attending any camp session throughout the summer. Stop by anytime during the Orientation hours to meet our summer staff, view camp activity spaces, and review drop-off and pick-up procedures for your camper(s). Camp gear, including camp T-shirts, will be distributed and camp administrators will be available to answer all of your questions. This orientation is mandatory for all new camp families and highly recommended for returning families.

 

Camp Open House

Each camp will culminate with a camp Open House, which takes place the second Thursday of each camp session from 6-7 p.m. During the Open House, camper’s take the time to show off what they’ve learned at camp through songs and skits. Afterwards, all families are welcome to take part in camp activities, view camp projects, and explore the Museum’s exhibits.
